The Isolation HospitalIn 1912, Willimantic joined the rest of the world in being hit by the smallpox epidemic. Dr. Keating was Willimantic's Health Official.

Rear view of the Isolation HospitalAfter much discussion over a period of time, Willimantic decided to open an isolation hospital. Dr. Keating volunteered to stay at the hospital during the entire time it was in operation, thus putting his own health "on the line".

Main Street in 1912This photo shows an auto registered to C.W. and E.J. Tryon. It is parked almost in front of 715 Main St. where they had a real estate office. The Irvin House hotel and the sign for Merrill Jones’ Hack and Livery business are on the left side of the photo. We believe the photo was taken in 1912. August 1, 2013 Pic of the Week

Dr. Keating with Nurse Ryan and Frank Brooke, the cook.Nurse Ryan and Cook Brooke also stayed at the hospital during this time. As a result of these peoples' efforts, there were no deaths due to smallpox in Willimantic.

"Our Hack"Patients were taken to the hospital in this conveyance. The "hack" was purchased by the city. Patients were picked up at their homes and transported to the hospital in the evenings "in order to eliminate any morbid curiosity".

Gem Movie Theater The YMCA and the Gem Movie Theater were built in 1912. They are pictured here in 1963, shortly before the frontages disappeared below decorative concrete blocks.

1914 Main Street buildingsThis fine row of Main Street buildings were photographed in 1914. The Melony Block on the left was originally the Congregational Church, built in 1828. It was demolished in the 1930s. The Gem Cinema, on its right, was Willimantic's first custom built movie house. It was built in 1909. Next is the YMCA block, built in 1912. The commercial block at the right was built in 1890, and is still standing, Unfortunately, the two architectural gems in the centre are hidden by decorative concrete blocks, placed there
