High and ValleyPaul Ashton identified this as, "the intersection of Valley and High with the steeple of the First Congregational church in the background (the one that blew down in the 1938 hurricane). It must have been shot from the Normal School building." To the left of the Congregational Church's steeple, one can make out one of St. Mary's steeples (they were modified in about 1958) and, to the left of that, very faintly, St. Joseph's pre-hurricane steeple.

Primary Educators trying out a teaching technique.This is a group of students at the Normal School. They are celebrating "The Coming of Spring". The picture is from the 1921-1922 Normal School catalog.The 1914 issue of "Primary Education" devoted several pages to methods of teaching children about Spring. There were several photos showing ideas for the teaching process.

Margaret C. HurleyMargaret Hurley was the wife of Willimantic Mayor James Hurley. She was elected as Representative of Windham to the State Legislature in Nov., 1934. A graduate of the Normal School, she was a schoolteacher and a member of the Democratic State Central Committee.

Normal School - The 22 Club “The 22 Club” was one of the organizations for students at the Normal School. It was founded by the class of ’22 and its purpose was "to encourage an understanding attitude toward the theater...and to encourage the use of drama in community recreation”.

1897 ParadeThis is a photo of a parade supposedly held on Jully 4, 1897 and was taken at the corner of North and Prospect Streets. No information can be found concerning the sign on the wagon which reads, “Normal School Steps. Bids are now open for the season of 97. Secure them early”.

Savings InstituteThe Willimantic Savings Institute was the city's first brick block, built in 1869. It was also the first home of the Willimantic Normal School in 1892 -- the teacher training school that has evolved into Eastern Connecticut State University

Normal School fire of 1943The State Teachers College (formerly known as the Normal School) burned on Sunday, Aug. 29, 1943. The firs started at about 4 in the morning and the damage was estimated to be $200,000.

Normal SchoolThe Normal School fire destroyed not only the building but 60,00 volumes in the college library.

Classes were to begin in about 10 days and were relocated to what became F.R. Noble School and also to the Congregational Church Hall

The Willimantic Savings InstituteThe Willimantic Savings Institute building pictured in 1928, just before renovations covered the original design. It was built in 1870, and was the first home of the Windham Normal School. Note the A & P store to the right. The Savings Institute was formed in 1842, and was located in the building now the home of Schillers Sewing Machines.
